The UK could be in for a winter of Power Cuts if the weather is too cold. Alarmingly, several indicators suggest that this winter could be particularly severe.
The problem arises from the acute shortage of natural gas. Around 40% of Britain’s electricity is generated from gas-burning power stations. If the weather is cold and gas supplies run low then gas power stations will be switched off to ensure households have gas for their boilers and cooking stoves. This would lead to blackouts across much of the country.
It is worth considering whether or not your business or household needs a generator as an emergency power backup solution. Do you need your computers to continue running? Could you get by without your fridge or freezer? Is your boiler controlled by an electronic console? Do you heat your building with electric heaters?
If you think you need a generator then it is worth getting your order in sooner rather than later. If power cuts become a reality then demand for generators will undoubtedly exceed supply.
